As National Adoption Week approaches (5-9 November), Islington is calling for more people to consider adopting to help reduce the number of children waiting for a new family.
The North London Adoption Consortium (NLAC) information evening will be held at Islington's Assembly Hall on Upper Street, N1 at 6.30pm on Wednesday 7 November.
The event will give anyone thinking about adoption the chance to discover the rewards of becoming an adoptive parent and help children find the right loving homes as quickly as possible.
Celebrity vocal coaches and TV presenters David and Carrie Grant will attend the session to discuss their own experiences of adopting a child, along with other adoptive parents. Prospective adopters will also have the opportunity to hear from childcare professionals and to have an informal chat to find out if adoption could be the right choice for them.
There are children of all ages waiting to be adopted in north London, from eight weeks-old to six years. They come from a range of backgrounds and some of them need to be placed with their brothers and sisters.
Islington forms part of the NLAC along with Camden, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. The consortium is particularly looking for families to adopt black and ethnic minority children, dual heritage children, children with special needs, sibling groups and older children. Applications are welcome from all sectors of the community and you don't have to be a from north London resident.
Islington Council's executive member for children and families, Cllr Richard Watts, said:
"We want all children in Islington to be given the opportunities to get the best start in life. Last year our adoption team found new families for 19 Islington children, and 11 have been adopted so far this year which is great news. But there are still children in need of a good home.
"We know all sorts of people make good adoptive parents and could offer a child or children a loving and supportive family for life. So if you think this could apply to you, come along to find out more."
Carrie and David Grant have three birth children and have recently adopted another child. Carrie said:
"Adopting a child is such a rewarding and life changing experience. Sadly there are many children in need of a loving family home, so we would like to encourage anyone who has ever thought about adoption to come to this event being held by the North London Adoption Consortium and find out more."
The NLAC information evening will run from 6.30 - 8.30pm at Islington's Assembly Hall (next door to Islington Town Hall), Upper Street, London N1 2UD.
