Detectives said a woman was on the Number 19 bus in Blackstock Road when a man got on, sat next down to her and started groping her thigh.
The woman alerted the bus driver but the attacker managed to jump off the bus and ran away. He got off at Islington Green and was seen heading towards Angel tube.
DC Liz Dobson, of Islington CID, said: “We are hoping that by releasing this CCTV, someone may recognise the man and help us identify him.
"This incident has been extremely upsetting for the victim, and we are keen to find the suspect to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
The suspect is described as a black man with broad shoulders, aged approximately 40 - 50 years old. He was wearing a beige suede jacket, grey trousers, glasses and was carrying a black leather bag with him.
Anyone with information should contact Islington CID on 0300 123 1212, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
