It was widely reported at the end of last year that the Sobell Centre was expected to be bulldozed at the end of this year and rebuilt; a scheme that was scheduled to take 2 years.
Council leaders claimed that the building was dilapidated and would be cheaper to rebuild than repair.
Is this still happening? When the Clissold Leisure Centre was rebuilt local people were left without facilities for years as it was rebuilt and had to be closed for a further year or so to correct issues with the original rebuild!
The latest claim by Islington Council seems to have been that the consultation process was completed, a decision reached, but that the next stage would take at least 18 months to complete and that during it the centre would stay open qurl.com/548fj
This seems to have been published in Jan09, so I guess we have at least a year of access to the facilities before they get around to doing anything in particular.

The whole hairbrained scheme was based on selling part of the land for property development - something that would have had Michael Sobell turning in his grave.
The collapse of the market has happily scuppered the scheme, at least for now.

It is poorly designed. The way there is no pavement is annoying. It is a landmark -- I remember iceskating to Teena Marie many years ago -- but so was Highbury. They could do a lot more with that space, as well replace the centre.
