Nigerian Carnival UK, postponed from last year following funding problems, is set to return to Finsbury Park this August. Celebrating 50 years of Nigerian independence, the event aims to showcase the best in Nigerian culture and commerce. With its anti-gun and -knife crime theme, the carnival also hopes to send positive messages about the community.
In 2007, the carnival in Burgess Park attracted over 20,000 people. This year's event is expected to feature 33 artists and DJs as well as a range of food stalls and commercial exhibitors. There will also be a Kids Zone with dance and fashion showcases, food tasting and language workshops.
Organisers have consulted with local police on how best to run the event safely, and are now waiting for their licence from Haringey Council. The carnival hopes to offer a "convivial atmosphere" for British Nigerians and local people. Follow the event at Nigerian Carnival UK's Facebook page.
If all goes ahead as planned with the licence application, Nigerian Carnival will run from 7-8 August in the park.
