Islington's bloomin' marvellous

Islington is preparing to defend its 2009 Overall Best Entry award
in London in Bloom on 16 July, and hopes to improve on last year's
Silver-gilt award at Britain in Bloom in August.
The RHS "In
Bloom" awards take place annually at local, city-wide and national
levels throughout the summer months. Judging is currently underway for
the Islington in Bloom awards, and soon the borough's
parks,
streets and gardens will be scrutinised by RHS judges. As well as
horticultural achievement, the judges will also be considering what
Islington does to promote environmental responsibility and
improve community participation.
Residents, schools,
businesses, pubs and commuity gardeners can all play a role in
brightening up the borough, as well as the many parks and open spaces
that are cared for year-round by professional gardeners and groundsmen.
Last year, Islington brought home its best-ever London in Bloom
results, winning the City category and bringing home Gold and
Silver-gilt awards for a number of public spaces.
Islington
also represented London and the South East for the first time in 2009
at the national Britain in Bloom awards, winning a Silver-gilt and
nomination for the Community Award. "High levels of hard work and
passion from our residents, businesses and community groups paved the
way for this fantastic opportunity," said Councillor Ruth Polling,
Islington’s Lead Member for Parks and Open Spaces. "Thanks to you all!"
