A shop on Stroud Green Road has been penalised by Islington Council for selling alcohol to young people under the legal age limit. Stroud Green Convenience Store sold alcohol to under-18s on both October 2009 and 27 July 2010. A council licensing committee suspended the alcohol licence for 14 days last month.

Islington Council is taking firm action against shops in Islington who sold age-restricted products to underage young people. Two other shops in the borough had their licences suspended for repeat sales of alcohol to underage youths, and another company based in Chapel Market was fined for selling a knife to a

14-year-old.  A shop in Exmouth Market was also fined for selling cigarettes to an

underage teenager.

Islington Council's Trading Standards team and Islington Police carried

out test purchases as part of ongoing work to stamp out underage sales.Traders are reminded to ask

for photo ID if they think buyers of age-restricted products are aged

25 or under.

Cllr Barbara Sidnell, Islington Council's executive member for

community safety, says, "There's no place for underage sales in Islington and we will prosecute shops who break the law. I'd urge all shops to make sure they ask for identification if they

have any doubt in their mind, and to ring the council if they want any

advice."

Stroud Green Convenience Store, Costcutter on Hornsey Road, and Canonbury Food & Wine on St Paul's Road have all had extra conditions imposed on their

licence to help stop underage sales.

To report suspected underage sales, or for advice on how to avoid

making underage sales, call Islington Council's Trading

Standards department on 020 7527 2000.
