Local councils have been busy this week gritting roads and pavements to keep local people safe in the winter weather. Islington council has gritted more than 1000 miles of road with around 210 tonnes of salt on carriageways and another 40 tonnes on footways, and Haringey Council has been gritting priority routes and clearing pathways.

Local councils have been showing true grit on the roads this week
Street cleaning teams from both councils have been made into gritting teams instead, to focus on clearing snow and ice . Rubbish and collections have been made as normal in Islington, and where safe in Haringey. Teams have also been refilling grit bins, and Islington has been trialling three Powerflex Precinct gritting machines, which can grit pavements and plough snow off them at the same time.
Cllr Paul Smith, Islington Council's executive member for environment, says, "Our staff have been working round the clock to keep Islington moving and safe. I'd like to thank the residents and businesses who have also been doing their bit and gritting the pavement near their homes and premises."
