20mph scheme motoring ahead

We reported at the end of last year that Islington residents were being consulted over proposals for new 20mph zones, including a new zone in the Hanley Road area. That consultation is now complete and results have been approved by the area committees.

This sign is set to become a familiar sight.
Of 11,000 responses, 61% of households said they would support the introduction of further 20mph speed limits. 36% said they were against, and 3% had no view.
Following the approval of the consultation results, a statutory legal consultation will be carried out in order to approve the new Traffic Regulation Orders and signage. The scheme, introducing a 20mph limit on all minor roads, is expected to come into force early this year.

Hard to know which way to go on this one. Traffic in the area is bad enough as it is on the main roads, so will reducing speeds down cut-throughs etc only serve to make it worse?! But then anything that cuts down on injuries and deaths surely can only be a good thing!? I guess I'd need to know some statistics on accidents on the roads they're planning to change before I could make a sound decision. I don't suppose anybody knows?
