Together with the planned turbine on Eaton Manor in Waltham Forest enough energy would be created to power Hackney's street lighting at night and all of the main Council buildings by day.
Mayor Hackney, Jules Pipe, said "Hackney Marshes are very special. A proposal to put a wind turbine on East Marsh will arouse strong feelings and it is a matter that deserves serious debate. Hackney Marshes belong to the whole borough and I want as many people as possible to take part in the consultation. If the overwhelming public response to this is no, then this will not go ahead. This will not be forced through if the residents don't want it".

People are jumping at the chance to do something positive. There are so few positive choices we open to us these days. When property rights and big-money is in the picture it seems to be a fairly simple matter to exploit the best intentions of good people.

That isn't what kemblek believes - it's a copy and paste from a story that appeared on Hackney's web site hence the link.
That said, it is true that more people could be bothered to say "yes" than to say "no".

The population of Hackney is about 205 thousand, that is 205,000 or two-hundred and five-thousand. It was only 609 of these people who responded in favour Hackney Council's hive-off of a section of Hackney Marshes. If Kembiek believes that 609 people represent an overwhelming proportion of the Hackney population there could be a lucrative career ahead for him, organising elections in Afghanistan.

Residents have overwhelmingly said ‘yes’ to the idea of having a wind turbine on Hackney Marshes to generate green energy.
In response to Hackney Council’s recent public consultation, 87 per cent said they were in favour of the proposal.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is already going ahead with one wind turbine on Eton Manor in Waltham Forest, and as part of this there is an opportunity for Hackney Council to install a second wind turbine at East Marsh to generate local renewable energy as part of the legacy of the 2012 Games.

The choice between football and the environment is a cruelly false one. It disguises the take over of common land by Energy Multi-nationals. It plays on people's capacity to surrender something for the greater good. For shades of things to come go to Millfields Recreation Ground, E5, and see the land grab being carried out by the National Grid and EDF by their redeveloped power station.
The is a lot more to Hackney Marshes the football. It is a semi rural space with wide horizens and open skies existing in close proximity to very dense housing conurbations. It ia part of the greater Lea Marshes which are about to be cut through by High rise housing developments, courtesy of Waltham Forest Council.
If schools were teaching children the pleasures and the meaning of the enjoyment of the countryside they would be spending more time outdoors and less time indoors with the heating thermostat at maximum while they play at virtual outdoors games. No Profits in that though is there... except perhaps for the ecology of our world.
