Hanley Road 20mph area entering next stage of consultation

Following the public consultation this summer, council officers presented their recommendation for traffic calming speed humps and a 20mph speed limit in the Hanley Road area. The calming measures will be "sinusoidal" humps, which are smoother for cyclists to ride over. The recommendation was presented at the North Area committee meeting in September and unanimously approved by all councillors.
Residents are now invited to take part in the statutory consultation period for the humps and other calming measures, which will include extending the kerb into the road and introducing raised pedestrian crossings. These will be advertised in the magazine "Islington Now", and on the streets near the locations of the proposed humps. Legitimate objections to specific speed humps can be given to the council in writing to the address on the notices.
Caroline Horrocks, Senior Media Officer at Islington Council, said the introduction of speed humps would, "greatly reduce the severity of injury in case of any traffic collision, particularly in the case of pedestrians and cyclists. Currently there are twenty-nine 20mph zones across the borough, which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured: from 227 in 2001 to 75 in 2008 - a drop of 67%."

I hadn't realised that humps get so complex. Brilliant analogy though, Gerry. They sort of are suicidal humps in that they're there to reduce people from going so fast and causing silly accidents. They've started to put more humps down the road from me too, I guess they're probably a good thing in the long run. Bit of an eysore though :/

ReportHi Gerry - "sinusoidal" actually means "shaped like a sine wave". The idea is that it's a gentler, more continuous shape of hump than some of the alternative designs that still causes cars to slow down but which won't throw a cyclist off their steed! They're also made of noise-reducing material so that's another additional benefit to the design over alternative hump options.
Suicidal humps are, to my knowledge, not an option the council have looked into to ate!

Reportwhat's a "sinusoidal" hump? Sounds almost like a 'suicidal' hump - which clearly isn't a goog thing!
