Local election results 2010: Labour hold Haringey and Hackney and gain Islington

In the 2010 local elections, Labour have made big gains UK-wide. In Finsbury Park, the party has regained control of Islington council, which had been under no overall control with 23 Labour and 23 Liberal Democrat councillors. This election saw 35 Labour councillors elected to Islington's 16 wards, Tollington and Finsbury Park wards returned 3 councillors apiece.
As with Thursday's general election results, Hackney took longer than usual to return its 50 Labour councillors and new mayor, again due to unprecedented turnout. The Hackney local result was business as usual in the traditional Labour stronghold. Perhaps more surprising was the undented Labour majority in Haringey, where the existing council had been under fire over the past year, particularly over the issues of education and children's services.
We'll have more on Hackney's new mayor this week. In the meantime, were you surprised by the local election results?
