Bank staff commit to raising £100,000 for local cancer support

Barclays staff in North London have pledged to raise £100,000 to fund a Senior Specialist Dietician, which will support people affected by cancer in the local community.

Not satisfied with raising over £140,000 in just three months for Macmillan last year, over 3,000 staff will be renewing their efforts to fund another vital post for the area. Research by Macmillan has shown that without the appropriate support 20% of all people directly affected by cancer could die as a result of malnutrition.  This life saving post at UCL Hospital Trust will support 1,200 people who experience problems with eating as a result of their treatment or because of their cancer.

Fundraising will kick off with some big picnics and will follow with a whole raft of activities including dress down days, quizzes and taking part in Macmillan’s flagship event- the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on 25 September. Every branch in the area will be getting involved to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

Adam Rowse, Regional Director at Barclays, says: “We are very excited to be supporting Macmillan again this year. One in three people are diagnosed with cancer, so supporting Macmillan makes a real and tangible difference to the local community, which is extremely important to our staff.”

Joseph Scheinkonig, Corporate Fundraiser at Macmillan, says: “Barclays staff and customers have already made a huge contribution to Macmillan and we are thrilled that they will be continuing to support us. Their fundraising has been fun, innovative and, above all, has helped us to improve lives in North London.”

Two million people are currently living with cancer in the UK and Macmillan provides essential practical, emotional and financial support to those affected.
