"MetaboliCity is a vision of a city that metabolizes its resources and waste to supply its inhabitants with all the nourishment they need"

Rachel Wingfield, the researcher at Central St Martins College, who is behind the project said: "We want to persuade every Londoner to grow something of their own, even if it's just a few herbs in a teapot. We are developing options using outside spaces such as balconies and terraces, and inside areas like windowsills, cupboard shelves and even kitchen walls".

Islington restaurant Fifteen is one of six local sites involved in the project, growing their own salads and displaying seedlings on every table and windowsill.

Inspired?

We have invested in a pot of basil which is on the side in the kitchen - does that make me a gardener?!

I my case it is not so much the space as I have a garden, it is the time investment that has always put me off. However I have to say my garden was totally overgrown and I went out the other day and found a huge section of it was growing mint - I think my housemate planted a sprig last year and now there is huge patch of the stuff! It has totally inspired me to grow more herbs because if they can grow that bountifully left to their own devices then it gives me confidence that they dont need too much care and attention.

This is such a great idea.  I grow all my own herbs.  It is tricky finding space to do anything more than that in London, though.
