The school, a specialist arts centre since 2004, will gain a new performance space,arts and music rooms, a video editing suite and a radio studio. Plans also include be a new larger dining area and a dedicated adult learning centre. About half of the work will be construction of new buildings, with the remainder involving refurbishment and remodelling of existing structures. The planned works will also enable production of at least 20% renewable energy onsite.
The Building Schools for the Future programme aims to provide young people with the best possible facilities and environments in which to learn and achieve. By updating school buildings and improving facilities, the scheme hopes to raise aspirations and attainment in schools. Building Schools for the Future is the biggest-ever schools investment programme, and will impact on nearly every secondary school in England.
All three of the Finsbury Park adjacent boroughs of Hackney, Haringey and Islington will be carrying out building works as part of the second wave of the BSF programme over the next five years. The work at Islington Arts and Media School, which seeks to be sensitive to the surrounding conservation area and includes design input from students at the school, is due to be completed by 2012.
