As we recently reported, plans for the redevelopment of the iconic modernist Hornsey Town Hall have been made available to the public.
The proposed arts centre to be housed within the Garde II listed building will include a theatre,
studio space, cinema and roof-top garden. The "cultural hub" in the Town Hall building will reflect its use until 1980 as a concert hall.
Other plans for the revamp of the 1930s Art Deco building include a nursery and gym, exhibition space for art shows, and an outdoor space for performances and public art.
Haringey Council has pledged £7.1 million to begin the proposed redevelopment, with a further £10 million to be raised by the sale of land at the back of the town for housing. The Hornsey Town Hall Creative Trust, which has led the rebuilding plans, will fundraise the remaining capital for the project.
The building works will be completed in three phases. If approved by the planning department the first phase of building, which will include the construction of a new assemly hall for which can be used for concerts, dance performances and as a cinema, could begin as early as this summer for completion in 2012.
Chair of the Hornsey Town Hall Creative Trust Ann Wilks said, "This is an
important milestone in the life of Hornsey Town Hall. We very much hope the community will support
the scheme." Architect John McAslan added, "It is hugely important that we save our town halls from the ravages of decay."
