Earlier this year we reported on the concerns of conservationists and local people about the proposed development of Tottenham Hotspur's prestigious new stadium on the High Road. The club have now announced that plans to demolish a number of characterful Victorian buildings have been revised in response to resident's concerns, and the buildings will become part of the new development.
Locals had feared that the stadium's developers would bullodoze a row of Victorian shops, the Red House building, the White Hart pub and an Edwardian dispensary, to make way for an open flat space. Campaign supporters from The Victorian Society and English Heritage called on the club to preserve the character of Tottenham High Road, a designated conservation area.
The news that plans have now been altered to incorporate the buildings into courtyard setting, which will combine the features of the older buildings with the ambitious modern stadium, has been warmly received.
Local MPs David Lammy and Lynne Featherstone welcomed the new plans, which will now be resubmitted to Haringey Council for approval.
