Can we save Finsbury Park's shops?

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) predicts that about 15% of High Street shops will be empty by the end of 2009.

This is more than twice the number which were vacant at the start of the year. Take a walk down Blackstock Road or Stroud Green Road and conduct your own survey; I bet you struggle to find a row of 10 shops which are all occupied.

"It is clear that in many places, recession is accelerating a trend of decline that was already under way," the BRC said.

"The dangers associated with this deteriorating picture are clear. Vacant units are perhaps one of the most visible impacts of the economic downturn. Shoppers who are unable to ignore increasingly visible vacant units in their local communities are likely to further reinforce falling consumer confidence."

Can anything be done?

You'll all be pleased to hear, there is an application to turn number 5 Blackstock Road into a new take away! Great stuff, not sure we have many options with take aways :)
I have posted a formal objection to Hackney, mentioning that we already have 16 hot food outlets on that one block already on Blackstock road.
Please feel free to add to the complaints! Search the Hackney.gov website for application 2009/0863
This is not a case of NIMBY honestly! I just think there needs to be a balance of the type of shops we have.

    Any thoughts?

Shame no one ever spent their hard earned in the lovely flower show...it's all economics at the end of the day.
What is a bigger shame is that most of the shops around the station just sell tat, fake Nike trainers, fruit and veg that has been sat in the sun all day, stolen phones, burgers or 99p chicken in a box. There is no variety and very little quality in the area.
It's a shame because as has been pointed out on another thread, the area has lot's of people that would welcome some quality shops and cafes.

Five years ago there were more empty shops that now around FP. In the last year new places opened and they are still there. I don't see such gloomy picture here around...
