Brilliant quality vegetarian indian food at ridiculously cheap prices. The kind of place you can go to when it's actually cheaper than going out and buying the ingredients. Between £3 and £4 per dish. Yet, unlike Wetherspoons and the like, here the food is absolutely superb. The kind of vegetarian food to turn the most hardened carnivore.
It's an odd set-up to be sure - write down your order on a slip of paper and take it up to place it with the chefs - something that isn't made entirely obvious by the rather aloof staff on your first visit! All part of the charm of course.

ReportJai Krishna is a great place for a budget dinner. It's resolutely non-fancy and doesn't serve alcohol (although you can bring your own from the excellent off licence across the road), but the range of astoundingly cheap South Indian food more than makes up for the lack of a salubrious environment.
The food is all vegetarian and includes a number of dishes which may be unfamiliar to those brought up on typical British tandoori-style cuisine, but there's an excellent range of curries, dosas and side dishes. In common with many South Indian restaurants, Jai Krishna offers a thali selection for those uncertain about what to pick, which is a good option to go for if you're either indecisive or very hungry.
There are some pleasingly authentic deshi quirks, too, like the write-your-own-order system and the archaic handwritten accounting system performed by the venerable gent at the back of the room, but these are all part of Jai Krishna's home-style charm.
